Book Description:
In a neighbourhood full of secrets, who can you trust?
Ruby and Mike have built a quiet and happy life, but their lives are about to unravel—with deadly consequences.
When Mike’s new promotion keeps him away from home, Ruby befriends the charming new neighbour, Henry. Their forbidden connection ignites something Ruby has never felt before—but it also unleashes something sinister, and leaves her questioning everything she thought she ever wanted.
Strange things start happening. Items missing, doors unlocked and a chilling note left behind. Are Ruby’s fears real, or is something far darker at play?
Trapped in a nightmare of manipulation and deceit, secrets surface and cracks in her relationships are revealed. Ruby soon realises danger isn’t always found in the shadows…
When the mask of perfection slips, how far would you go to protect yourself?
For fans of Lisa Jewell, The Perfect Stranger is a gripping psychological thriller about betrayal, obsession and the lies we tell—to others and ourselves.
My Thoughts:
Ruby is a person who likes to live a relatively quiet life. She likes to keep herself to herself and lives for her writing. She has hopes and dreams like we all do but they don’t seem to be forthcoming and her marriage to Mike isn’t quite how she hoped it would be. She has some demons which she struggles with and at times I wanted to give her a good shake to see what was right in front of her.
Throughout the story you never know quite who to trust. Some characters are likeable, others definitely not as much, yet I was constantly swapping my mind as to whether any of them could be the one behind the strange things that were happening to Ruby and in her home. At times I was even doubting poor Ruby as to whether it was all in her mind!
I liked the setting of the close knit neighbourhood where you never really know what goes on behind closed doors. The gossiping as people do, the whatsapp group and the monthly book club. It just made the story even more intriguing as we are fed snippets of the characters lives with some surprising revelations.
The Perfect Stranger will certainly have you asking yourself the question of how well you know the people around you. The pacing is gentle to start with whilst luring you in, then before you know it you have been sucked right in and racing through the pages to the all important finale which did not disappoint. There were times when I kept forgetting to breath as well as jumping up and down on the edge of my seat in anticipation of what was coming next. A fabulously dark and twisty read that will send your pulse soaring!
